CHAPTER 14

Bliss

“You sure you can’t just leave him in there? He was kind of a dick.” Flora leaned against the bathroom doorframe, brown hair bouncy around her shoulders as she talked animatedly.

A laugh bubbled up in my chest, releasing some of the tension I’d been holding. I knew with a bone-deep assuredness that this was the right thing to do. I just wasn’t quite as sure if it was a smart thing to do. “Hmmm. He’s too pretty to go to jail.”

Her smirk turned mischievous. “You never know, he may like it.”

A barely audible growl formed in the back of my throat at the image of Ares “liking” anything with anyone else.

Flora hopped back a step. “Easy there, killer. I was just kidding. At least you got your color back.”

My reflection showed a cool pink flush creeping up my neck, overtaking the ghostly white that was there a moment before. I relaxed my fingers, opening my fist slowly, and ignored the sting from where my nails had dug into my palms.

I met her warm gaze, and she shrugged. “You looked a little lost there for a second. Thought the idea of having to share one of your guys would bring you back.”

I rolled my eyes hard and got back to pulling my hair into a high bun. I’d gotten caught up in the details of our plan that were shaky at best. I didn’t realize I’d completely zoned out while doing it. “I wasn’t lost. I was thinking.”

Her warm hand wrapped around my arm, turning me toward her. “This is going to work. It better. You can’t leave me alone with these idiots. They’ll be so whiny if you don’t come back.” Her words were playful, but her voice was strained. She couldn’t come with me for obvious reasons. One, everyone thought she was dead, and two, we only had enough of the new formula blockers for me. If everything worked out, it would get both Ares out and provide Flora the freedom she needed.

I smiled, doing my best to reassure her, even though I wasn’t sure. “The place will be full of people. Once I say what I have to say, there’s no way they’re going to let Nero take me.” My stomach dipped, knowing I didn’t know what exactly that would be.

Rafe had paced around the living room a few nights ago while explaining the charges Ares was up for, the Assembly, and our only chance of getting him out of there. Me.

The guys had spent the entire night debating back and forth whether it was safe enough for me to go. All the while, I’d been heating with rage that they were going to once again try to make a decision about my life for me instead of with me. I had a plan, not that anyone would let me speak.

Killian and Rafe had gotten into a heated argument, where Rafe thought every alpha would attack me, and Killian thought they could cover me in a cloak. I almost laughed at that.
